Katharine Quarmby
Katharine Quarmby, journalist and campaigner gave a talk at Edinburgh International Book Festival 2011. In "Scapegoat", examines the roots of our uncomfortable and often hostile attitudes towards disabled people. A recent survey by Scope found that 47% of disabled people had either experienced physical abuse or witnessed the physical abuse of a disabled friend. Such statistics have led her to conclude that it’s time for greater official recognition of these incidents as hate crimes. She traces the story from Greek and Roman culture through to Britain’s 'community care' programme.
